THE "WORKING DRAFT" PROTOCOL |
The November/December 1995 issue of The Catholic Faith featured an article by Louis V. Guardiola entitled "Teaching the Catechism of the Catholic Church to Adults." The author states: "The purpose of this article is to provide an example of how to adopt the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) for use as the foundation of an adult religious education program in the parish." The article very briefly enumerates various aspects of the program used at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in Detroit, MI, and comments on their effectiveness. Guardiola observes, "We have found it an absolute necessity to first build up the student's religious vocabulary, then to introduce the main theological themes and develop the rationale behind each article or section of the CCC in order to penetrate and achieve a real understanding of the CCC."
Most Rev. Fabian W. Bruskowitz of the Diocese of Lincoln has published an article in the March/April 1996 issue of The Catholic Faith, entitled "The New Catechism." The article first offers an historical background on catechisms and catechetics from the time of the early Church to the present. The bishop writes: "The new Catechism of the Catholic Church should be read and understood in the light of its history, especially Catechesi tradendae and the General Catechetical Directory." After the historical perspective there follow sections on the "structure" and the "characteristics" of the Catechism. Bishop Bruskowitz states: "Now, the new Catechism of the Catholic Church is a book that should be on the shelf of every Catholic family that wants to be current in ecclesiastical matters. . . . Owning and using a copy of the new Catechism will enable an educated Catholic to obtain once more a grasp of the Faith, and an authentic interpretation of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and I might add, the teaching of the Second Vatican Council."
