Pope Names San Antonio Seminary Rector as Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit

WASHINGTON (April 18, 2011)—Pope Benedict XVI has named Father José Arturo Cepeda, 41, rector of Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, as an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit.
           
The appointment was publicized in Washington, April 18, by Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States.
           
José Arturo Cepeda was born May 15, 1969, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He studied philosophy at San Luis Potosi Seminary, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in religious studies and psychology at the College of Santa Fe, New Mexico; a Master of Divinity degree from the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio; a Master of Arts degree from St. Mary’s University, San Antonio; and a licentiate and doctorate in spirituality from the Angelicum University in Rome.
           
Bishop-elect Cepeda was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1996.
           
After ordination to the priesthood he was parochial vicar of the San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio, 1996-2000. He was assigned to study in Rome 2000-2003. After his studies he was named director of the San Antonio Archdiocese vocation office, faculty adviser at Assumption Seminary and a lecturer in Hispanic studies at the Oblate School of Theology. In 2009, he was named vice-rector of Assumption Seminary and in 2010, rector.
